Women seeking an abortion in South Carolina would have to wait at least 24 hours after their ultrasound under a bill given initial approval Wednesday by a House subcommittee.
The measure would increase the waiting time from an hour to a day.
Proponents said it would bring South Carolina in line with other states that have waiting periods and give women time to reflect on the decision. Critics said requiring two trips creates a burden, especially for poor, rural women.
It’s a good start. Of course, when it is passed as both the President and the leadership of House and Senate have promised, the Freedom of Chioce Act (FOCA) will nullify South Carolina’s action (assuming it becomes SC law).
Elections have consequences. Keep that in mind in 2010 and 2012.
Federalism (or what little was left of it), RIP
This law won’t stand in Federal Court. I believe it was Casey v. Planned Parenthood that struck down a nearly identical provision in the early 1990s, and I think Kennedy was in that majority.
I appreciate the slight improvment- but it is only going to prove a stay of execution for so many tiny babies….this is the most disgusting issue of our day. It needs outlawing NOW
Aint’t gonna happen. The ACLU or some other anti-American group
will find a lawyer in a choir robe who will set this law aside.
