From the Western Mail: Archbishop to fly to US to avert church split

THE Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams will fly to the United States later this month, where the row over gay bishops is once again threatening to split the worldwide Anglican Church.

The global Anglican movement moved towards the brink of schism when the Episcopal Church ”“ its American arm ”“ consecrated its first openly gay bishop, Gene Robinson, in New Hampshire in 2003.

Most of the church’s members are based in the developing world, where homosexuality is often strongly discouraged and sometimes illegal.

And to fan the flames of the controversy, this week it emerged an openly lesbian Episcopalian priest could become the Bishop of Chicago. The Rev Tracy Lind is among the five nominees for bishop of the Chicago diocese.

Also this week, protests from Africa about gay priests reached a head when two American bishops were appointed to serve conservative US Anglicans ”“ but under the jurisdiction of Kenya.

Fact check: Is the ABC not in the USA at Georgetown?
Interesting quotation from 2002, by the way, in light of the existence of Lambeth I.10 enacted in 1998.

    Avert split? Unlikely.

I think the ABC’s sabbatical ended Aug. 31, so he’s probably gone back to work on the pile on his desk.

The consecrations in Kenya also “fan the flames of controversy.” Interesting that the writer did not begin that paragraph with the same phrase.

#3: “The consecrations in Kenya also “fan the flames of controversy.” ”

    How so?

And, if it bothers you so much, it’s easy to stop it. Just get the reappraisers to repent. There wouldn’t be ANY controversy if it weren’t for the actions of the reappraisers, Bob…

Another meeting? Why? the intent of TEc has been made clear, and continues to be re-stated with every bishop nomination.

#4, now my eyes are rolling.

I don’t believe that for a minute. A full “repentance” from +Robinson (disavowing his love and relationship with his partner, resigning from his episcopacy and denying his holy orders), an issuance of “repentance” from all bishops who participated in +Robinson’s consecration, and, likely, a statement of “repentance” from the good people of New Hampshire who elected +Robinson would not be enough to satisfy. The bar will always be raised, the line in the sand will always be shifted. It’s about power and it’s about sex and it’s about gender.
And I place the word in quotes because I truly do not believe that repentance is due where neither sin nor heresy are committed.

    But, I’m right…

“I don’t believe that for a minute. According to the Communique, which EVERYONE signed, it WOULD be enough, “Padre”. If you don’t think that would be enough, that’s all in your head.

“It’s about power and it’s about sex and it’s about gender. ”

    You are a liar.

“I truly do not believe that repentance is due where neither sin nor heresy are committed.”

And that’s why I use quotes when I call you “Padre”.

Of course it’s about power & sex& gender, Rolling Eyes, for the reappraisers – those are their gods.

For the rest of us, it’s about the Authoirty of Scripture, Tradition & Reason, being part of a wolrd-wide, Christ-based communion, being God-centered instead of man-centered, the Holy Spirit vs. the spirit of the age, etc. But I digress…

For anyone who’s actually been keeping score, the Primates gave up on “full repentance” quite some time ago. All they want now is a following of the WR and the DeS agreement.
