From the Morning Scripture Readings

And he went up on the mountain, and called to him those whom he desired; and they came to him. And he appointed twelve, to be with him, and to be sent out to preach and have authority to cast out demons.

Thanks, Kendall. I love this passage and the unique way Mark describes the call of the apostles. The twelve are chosen first and foremost simply to ”be with him,” and only then as a result of spending lots of time with him, to be sent out to preach and cast out demons, as he did.

Discipleship is still more caught than taught. And Lent is a great time to be reminded that the essence of being a follower of Jesus is to revel in the glorious privilege of being with him and learning his ways.
