The patent, which was filed by Apple in 2008, concerns “systems, devices and methods” for filtering “text-based messages” that contain “objectionable content”.
It aims to ensure youngsters aren’t able to use their iPhones to send text messages that contain swear words or suggestive language, sometimes known as “sexting”.
Holy Father, Thank you, that Apple has decided to stand against the plague of porn addiction and sexting that has gripped and destroyed so many human beings. Please move other corporations and groups will see the truth, the need and give them the wisdom to do likewise. In the Name of Jesus, Amen
Amen.
This is a good thing, but I strongly suspect that the slang will just change to accommodate the continued sexting. I can’t keep up with all the slang now, but this will act as an accelerant. The filters will never be able to keep up with the rapid pace of slang or with innuendo and metaphors and the acronymic contractions of all of the above.
@teotd idm, kippers wl fnd an altrntve wA 2 sA w@ dey gtta sA n Ø wl stop em.
(Translation: At the end of the day it doesn’t matter, kids in parents pockets eroding retirement savings will find an alternative way to say what they gotta say and no one will stop them.)
This is more about corporate image than it is anything else. It’s what we used to call “eye wash”. It gives the impression that things are getting better without actually making things any better.
And a side note, Steve Jobs does not allow porn apps for the iPhone – not part of Apple’s branding, although from a purely business angle, porn is a very lucrative area, as any major hotel chain can tell you (yes, even the family friendly ones).

I think this is a great idea! Our children are subject to much dirty language to begin with

S and T of Nuance has it exactly right. Such apps will have no real effect. This is like trying to cut of the drug trde by destroying the dealers in Mexico. They don’t make the market, the buyers do, and so the buyers (large numbers of adolescents apparently) will find a way that sellers can sell to them. Larry
