A Prayer for the Feast Day of John of Damascus

Confirm our minds, O Lord, in the mysteries of the true faith, set forth with power by thy servant John of Damascus; that we, with him, confessing Jesus to be true God and true Man, and singing the praises of the risen Lord, may, by the power of the resurrection, attain to eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for evermore.

One of my favorites–Yuchanna Al Demashqi (in the Arabic) –who showed his commitment to unoriginality (to borrow a phrase from Thomas C. Oden): “And since the enemy snares man by the hope of Godhead, he himself is snared in turn by the screen of flesh, and so are shown at once the goodness and wisdom, the justice and might of God” (An Exposition of the Orthodox Faith Book 3, c. 1).

“For that which is not assumed is not remedied” (on why Christ became fully human, so that our full humanity may be be redeemed, c. 18).
