I have had people ask me, in all seriousness, where in the Bible we find the names of the three wise men – and when I tell them that the Bible does not mention even the number of Magi, let alone names, they are astonished.

It is not surprising that this great story, told in brevity, would be filled out with details as it was told and re-told to wondering folk over the centuries. But of course we cannot rely upon these details, added in love in all probability, to obscure the heart of what God revealed – that he is in charge, and that Jesus is the Second Person of the Trinity, God incarnate.
