(RNS) State Department to Leave 'Mother' and Father' on Documents

Facing a backlash from conservative groups, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has ordered changes to a proposal to remove the terms “mother” and “father” from records of overseas births.

“With Secretary Clinton’s input, we will be revising the form to retain the existing designation of mother and father, in addition to the designation of parent,” said Rosemary Macray, a spokeswoman for the department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs.

Nice to see that conservatives have spoken out against efforts aimed at undermining traditional parental description on records of overseas births. Our son was born in Germany when we were stationed there years ago, and his birth certificate, which we received from the U.S. Consulate in Bonn, states that he is an American citizen born in Germany of American parents, and it includes both of our names.

What’s the point of keeping birth records if they don’t include important information like, you know, who the parents are? You can always put “unknown” under the father if that’s such an issue.

The entire point is to be able legitimize what ever sexual or “family” combination people can think of. What they need to do is have a write in section for polygamous/polyamorous/surrogate families.

Sort of fixing the draperies while the house falls down, isn’t it?

“The entire point is to be able legitimize what ever sexual or “family” combination people can think of.” Yes. It seemed a bit hypocritical to dump the “Father/ Mother” construct, yet stick with only two parents. I think a good case could be made for 5 parents:
The egg donor, the sperm donor, the womb-renter, and then the two (assuming marriage stays limited to two people) people who expect to raise the child.
