Today in History–May 10

You can check here and there. This is what stood out to me:

1863–Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson (age 39) died 8 days after being shot by friendly fire at Chancellorsville, Virginia.

1886–Karl Barth (died 1966), Swiss theologian, was born.

1940–German forces have invaded Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg by air and land….In London, it has been announced that Winston Churchill will lead a coalition government after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain said he was stepping aside.

Yes indeedy eastbear. Karl Barth died on 10th December 1968, the same day as Thomas Merton.

The only event I associate with today is the Golden Spike. It was a major factor in keeping West and East united.

I remember this date as the invasion of the Low countries in 1940. The reason may seem odd. We were making a calendar for class in grade school and we had to come up with something for our assigned dates. For this date in history, and since WW2 was recent, I drew a motif involving a dramatic swastika plowing into the Netherlands. Apparently the image horrified the teacher but I always have remembered the date.
