Trinity Episcopal Cathedral announced Wednesday that it will close The Cathedral School at the conclusion of the school year.
Preschool programs serving children ages six weeks to 4 years will remain open.
The 54-year-old Episcopal school serves students in pre-K through fifth grade and had become something of a Little Rock institution. Its enrollment started to decline after the opening of an elementary school at Episcopal Collegiate School in 2009, but had grown by 34 percent in the last three years, according to school officials.
Adding 20 students in this economy? Granted I don’t know any details but I would say that is pretty good. However, I expect this to have a ripple effect on the parish. School families will no longer be linked to the parish and will move elsewhere.
Surely the headmaster was aware of what was coming down the track. If the headmaster is shocked, the headmaster isn’t doing the job.
The headmaster may have (mictakenly) hoped that the Cathedral might find the needed funds given their $1,200,000 Plate & Pledge in 2009. Statmann
I was on the Cathedral Chapter here in Detroit when the Herlong School was closed. Declining enrollment was its death. Charter Schools (which are free) skimmed off the best of the public school students, and those who could afford tuition went to suburban schools. But at the Herlong School there was very little connection between the students, faculty and Cathedral parish.
