(LA Times) U.S. warns Syria regime against using chemical weapons

The United States bluntly warned Syrian President Bashar Assad against using chemical weapons as his forces lose ground to rebel fighters, and the United Nations said it was pulling nonessential foreign staff from Syria because of deteriorating security.

Warnings from President Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and other officials Monday reflected U.S. concerns over new intelligence indicating that Syria might be preparing to unleash some of its chemical agent stockpiles.

“The world is watching,” Obama said, addressing Assad in remarks at the National War College in Washington. “The use of chemical weapons is, and would be, totally unacceptable. And if you make the tragic mistake of using these weapons, there will be consequences, and you will be held accountable.”

So now we are going to commit acts of war against Syria, without a declaration of war or any lesser authorization by Congress. I sometimes wonder why we got upset when the same thing was done to us on 9/11.

Think sneak attack. vid Pearl Harbor.

Except Obama wants to play the role of Japan. Look if he wants to claim the right to assassinate, bomb and kill people in other countries, he can’t complain when we are on the receiving end.

Now if the situation is Syria is that important, he can go to Congress and ask for the requisite declaration of war. But Dictator Obama goes to war on his own without any input from the American people.

I dunno…..the American people voted for another Obama term and that stirring platform plank of “Forward”.

Since “Forward” can mean pretty much anything he wants it to mean, I fully expect we will get a broad education on all the meanings he will pour into “Forward” over the next 4 years [assuming we last that long].

Possibly attacking Syria is one of the meanings of “Forward”.

Let me get this straight. Action against Iraq over potential and actual use of WMDs was awful, even though the President sought and received Congressional approval. However, action (probably without Congressional approval) against Syria over what may be the very same physical WMDs (they were smuggled out of Iraq to Syria) is fine.

#5, Precise, concise, and probably correct. And yet another definition for “Forward”, A friend has expanded that as “Forward into the Dark Ages”.

Katherine, well put. The left could afford to get very sanctimonious when GW Bush was making the decisions but now they are faced with the harsh reality – if Assad lets loose with chemical weapons on his own people, and the Obama administration knew about it and took no steps at all to stop it, history will judge it very harshly. Yet this is the very thing for which they castigated Bush!

I don’t know what the right thing to do is here. But here we are, having assisted (and bragged about) getting Qaddafi out in Libya, with our ambassador murdered there at the end of that chain of events, and now we may do something or other in Syria, but nobody knows quite what or why. Meanwhile Egypt, with its 8 million Christians, descends into darkness as the tide of Islamism rises. We are giving defensive missiles to increasingly Islamist Turkey. And Iran? God help anyone living in the Muslim world today, especially Christians.
