(Christian Today) C of E Traditionalists ready to let women bishops legislation pass

The mood of the Church of England’s General Synod in York was set by a key intervention by a leading conservative evangelical early on in the debate.

Dr Philip Giddings, chairman of the House of Laity, said a better way had been found than November 2012, when the last package failed by six votes, but the package still did not meet the needs of everyone in the Church. He said: “The key for me is that this package is adequate.”

This was because of the new House of Bishops’ guidelines, which bishops and clergy will be disciplined if they fail to adhere to and which pledge proper oversight for those opposed to women bishops.

I’m sure Dr. Giddings realizes that these guidelines are merely that, guidelines. Or does he and those who think like him seriously believe anyone will be disciplined for failing to adhere to mere guidelines?

“Adequacy” is in the eye of the interpreter, as shall soon be made known by those responsible for it. I prophesy that it will take much less than 10 years as in TEc for the feminist posse to invade every diocese to ensure conformity rather than adequacy. In fact, given the written desire to “be like Kate” of the TEc, I should give it less than 12 months.

Any traditionalist who votes for this thinking that they will be protected or respected is a fool.
”I think I have found a new [hero, i.e. KJS]… a Bishop who defines herself as a bridge builder.”
dwstroudmd+, thanks for that link – I needed a laugh. Well, I’m sure we can expect a lot of KJS style ‘bridge building’ from WATCH now. How long before the safeguards go the way of the faith of the BCP and the 39 articles: formally affirmed and practically forgotten?

Peter dH, “given the written desire to “be like Kate” of the TEc, I should give it less than 12 months” and I’m sticking by it.

Well, lets see. 2 actual bishop, 1 TEC type fence sitter, and 37 revisionists (they just voted, remember, to revise a doctrine of the Church catholic that has been held since the Last Supper). The next 6 appointed will be female revisionists. Lets be real. The “perpetual” agreement of 20 years ago is now, unquestionably, reneged upon. In an organization where “perpetual” means temporarily expedient, “guideline” will be lucky to last until the second woman is ordained bishop.

I guess KJS will now make a point of wearing her pointy hat in Canterbury Cathedral.

Let’s also point out that all KJS needs to do is take up residence in a Wales or Scotland for a few years, and she could be ABoC.

Anyone who follows FiF Uk will have seen the recent shameful debacle when they turned on their own former leaders – the only senior clergy in the CofE who actually attempted to argue the traditional Anglo Catholic case in public – and have begun to fly kites suggesting a change of view on same sex relationships.

The slow decline of non modernist Anglo Catholicism has been evident since at least the 50s but it does surprise me that they have decided at the end to direct their fire at the only folks actually who were willing to speak on their behalf, whilst rolling over and playing dead before the very folks who rode roughshod over synodical procedure, abandoned Parliamentary commitments and would (and will) see them go gently into that dark night.
