Western Massachusetts Episcopal bishop lauds church

Brenda G. Tirado of Leyfred Terrace received her confirmation at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church yesterday at the hands of a special guest.

The Rev. Gordon P. Scruton, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts, performed the ceremony for Tirado, 31, who works as a victim and witness advocate at the Hampden County district attorney’s office.

“It was very inspiring. I had a chance to meet with the bishop (beforehand),” she said after her confirmation.

What’s the big deal? They act like there can be a Confirmation without a bishop and it was just extra special nice that the bishop’s visit happened to coincide with the Confirmation. Either they are a very strange version of the Episcopal Church, or the journalist was clueless, or both.

The fact that the reporter talked about the 8 year old “preparing for her First Communion” tells us that this article is a Roman who didn’t spend a lot of time finding out about the differences between Anglicanism and Romanism.

No. 2 – What is un-Anglican about a child’s preparing for First Communion?

Kevin (#2) – many Episcopal Churches make a big deal about “First Communion.” My last parish spent the entire 1st grade school year preparing kids and then made a big deal about admitting them to their First Communion. I have to admit that I kind of like this approach as it emphasises the special nature of the Sacrament. But, on the other hand, we already have so many special liturgies for special times in our lives that adding more might seem to be a bit too much.
