I wish they had used an example from history rather than searching current politics for illustrations. Doing so diverts the subject and the points being made.
I can’t believe they talked for over 5 minutes without bringing up the subject of illogical religious beliefs. Try convincing a convert that he or she made a mistake. But maybe, as #1 suggests, that would have further muddled the subject.
Other than religion, the most obvious instance of this effect is with marriage. Nobody ever admits they made a mistake marrying their spouse until the divorce.
