This toll has led a growing number of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/02\/upshot\/covid-opening-schools-experts.html\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/02\/upshot\/covid-opening-schools-experts.html\">epidemiologists<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/11\/upshot\/schools-reopening-coronavirus-experts.html\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/11\/upshot\/schools-reopening-coronavirus-experts.html\">pediatricians<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2020\/12\/29\/22204984\/chicago-medical-experts-in-person-learning-optimal-safe-opinion\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2020\/12\/29\/22204984\/chicago-medical-experts-in-person-learning-optimal-safe-opinion\">other physicians<\/a> to argue for reopening schools as broadly as possible, amid<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/26\/world\/cdc-schools-reopening.html\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/01\/26\/world\/cdc-schools-reopening.html\">growing<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/22\/health\/coronavirus-schools-children.html\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/22\/health\/coronavirus-schools-children.html\">evidence<\/a> that schools are not major venues for transmission of the virus.<\/p>\n<p data-pp-blocktype=\"copy\" data-pp-id=\"25.0\">As many of these experts have noted, the cost of restrictions on youth has gone beyond academics. The CDC found that the proportion of visits to the emergency room by adolescents between ages 12 and 17 that were mental-health-related <a href=\"https:\/\/khn.org\/morning-breakout\/mental-health-related-emergencies-increase-31-for-teens\/\">increased 31%<\/a> during the span of March to October 2020, compared with the same months in 2019.<a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/147\/3\/e2020029280\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/147\/3\/e2020029280\">A study<\/a> in the March 2021 issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, of people aged 11 to 21 visiting emergency rooms found \u201csignificantly higher\u201d rates of \u201csuicidal ideation\u201d during the first half of 2020 (compared to 2019), as well as higher rates of suicide attempts, though the actual number of suicides remained flat.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/the-lost-year-what-the-pandemic-cost-teenagers\">Read it all<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The pandemic year has been brutal for young people.
