Schools will become mobile phone-free zones, Gavin Williamson announced yesterday as he set out plans for a nationwide classroom ban.<\/p>\n

Under a new regime backed by the education secretary, heads would be told to stop pupils using their phones at any point during the school day.<\/p>\n

Williamson said that the ban would end the \u201cdamaging effect\u201d that overuse of mobile phones could have on children\u2019s mental health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n

The move pits him against teachers\u2019 leaders<\/a> who have criticised it as a \u201cdistraction\u201d from the pressing problems of helping pupils to catch up on learning lost during the pandemic.<\/p>\n
