During the initial COVID-19 outbreak and economic shutdown, the thriving percentage plunged nearly 10 percentage points to 46.4% by late April 2020, tying the record low last measured during the Great Recession.<\/p>\n<p>The most recent results, captured June 14-20, 2021, are based on 4,820 U.S. adults surveyed by web as a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/174158\/gallup-panel-methodology.aspx\">Gallup Panel<\/a>, a probability-based, non-opt-in panel of about 120,000 adults across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n<p>For its Life Evaluation Index, Gallup classifies Americans as &#8220;thriving,&#8221; &#8220;struggling&#8221; or &#8220;suffering&#8221; according to how they rate their current and future lives on a ladder scale with steps numbered from 0 to 10, based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/122453\/Understanding-Gallup-Uses-Cantril-Scale.aspx\">Cantril Self-Anchoring Striving Scale<\/a>.
