An unprecedented coalition of groups in the North East – including business leaders, unions, charities and the Bishop of Durham – have come together to condemn the Government\u2019s planned cut to universal credit as \u2018the exact opposite of levelling up\u2019.<\/p>\n
Groups including the North East Child Poverty Commission, Children North East and the North East England Chamber of Commerce have signed the letter to Chancellor Rishi Sunak opposing the ending of the Government\u2019s \u00a320 universal credit uplift.<\/p>\n
The benefit increase came into force at the beginning of the pandemic but ministers have confirmed that it will phased out over the coming months, despite opposition from across the policital spectrum and from a number of charities.<\/p>\n
A total of 17 North East organisations have signed the letter, as has Bishop of Durham the Rt Rev Paul Butler, who takes responsibility for child poverty for the Church of England.<\/p>\n
It points out that the cut in benefits will take \u00a35m a week from the regional economy and make it harder for the North East to recover from the Covid crisis.<\/p>\n
