In a New Year message, the Bishop of Gloucester, the Rt Revd Michael Perham, said that his hope for the nation was \u201cthat we will find ways of supporting those most affected by the recession\u201d\u009d and \u201clearn the lessons that will create a society less obsessed with material wealth\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n
The Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe, Dr Geoffrey Rowell, said that the economic crisis could be \u201cas significant as the fall of the Berlin Wall in changing the world\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n
Dr Williams, interviewed on BBC Radio 4\u2019s Today programme, said that the credit crunch was a \u201creality check\u201d\u009d. Sooner or later, people had \u201cto ask what are we assembling or accumulating wealth for\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n
Acknowledging that it was \u201csuicid\u00c2\u00adally silly\u201d\u009d for him to com\u00c2\u00adment on the economy, because he was \u201cnot an economist by any stretch of the imagination\u201d\u009d, the Arch\u00c2\u00adbishop said that he wanted to ask where the \u201cmoral questions are in the economic discourse\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n
