People who choose not to be vaccinated against the coronavirus should be encouraged to change their minds \u2014 but not compelled by law to do so, the Archbishop of Canterbury has said.<\/p>\n
In an interview on Radio 4\u2019s Today programme on Monday, Archbishop Welby was asked what attitude people should have towards those who do not have health reasons not to be vaccinated but decline anyway.<\/p>\n
He replied: \u201cI think we need to be encouraging rather than condemnatory, because condemning people doesn\u2019t do much good. . . Also, it increases the general sense of anger that comes at a time of insecurity and fear and grief.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we need to be encouraging to people to look after their neighbours. Jesus\u2019s great words \u201cLove your neighbour as yourself\u201d: if you do that, it seems to me you go and get vaccinated, and I\u2019d encourage people \u2014 I\u2019m not personally in favour of compulsory vaccination by law, but I am very much in favour of encouraging people, of incentivising people \u2014 to get vaccinated. It makes a difference. It\u2019s not decisive, it\u2019s not the whole story, but it\u2019s an important part of the story.\u201d<\/p>\n
