{"id":109437,"date":"2022-02-04T17:25:01","date_gmt":"2022-02-04T22:25:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=109437"},"modified":"2022-02-04T18:29:57","modified_gmt":"2022-02-04T23:29:57","slug":"wsj-dismal-russian-record-in-occupied-eastern-ukraine-serves-as-warning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=109437","title":{"rendered":"(WSJ) Dismal Russian Record in Occupied Eastern Ukraine Serves as Warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Russian-controlled areas of Ukraine\u2019s Luhansk and Donetsk regions were once the engines of the country\u2019s economy and dominated its politics.<\/p>\n<p>They produced its richest man, <a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052702304422704579573671029737580?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">billionaire industrialist Rinat Akhmetov<\/a>, as well as former President Viktor Yanukovych, ousted by the street protests that triggered the Russian invasion in 2014.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n<p>Since then, however, the two areas\u2014now nominally independent \u201cpeople\u2019s republics\u201d inside the larger regions of Luhansk and Donetsk\u2014have turned into impoverished, depopulated enclaves that increasingly rely on Russian subsidies to survive. As much as half the prewar population of 3.8 million has left, for the rest of Ukraine, more prosperous Russia or Europe. Those who remain are disproportionately retirees, members of the security services and people simply too poor to move. Current economic output has shrunk to roughly 30% of the level before the Russian invasion, economists estimate.<\/p>\n<p>As Russian President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/topics\/person\/vladimir-putin\">Vladimir Putin<\/a> is massing more than 100,000 troops for <a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-orders-3-000-troops-to-bolster-european-allies-in-russia-ukraine-crisis-11643810404?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a possible broader invasion of Ukraine<\/a>, the developments in Donetsk and Luhansk show <a class=\"icon none\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/russia-ukraine-putin-nato-11643121821?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">what many fear could happen to the rest of the country if he were to carry that out<\/a>.
