{"id":113043,"date":"2022-06-13T17:01:17","date_gmt":"2022-06-13T21:01:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=113043"},"modified":"2022-06-13T18:11:53","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T22:11:53","slug":"church-times-bishops-unite-to-condemn-shameful-rwanda-plan-for-asylum-seekers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=113043","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) Bishops unite to condemn \u2018shameful\u2019 Rwanda plan for asylum-seekers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government\u2019s \u201coffshoring\u201d policy, under which the first people are due to be deported to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/rwanda\">Rwanda<\/a> as early as Tuesday, \u201cshould shame us as a nation\u201d, the Archbishops of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/archbishop-of-canterbury\">Canterbury<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/archbishop-of-york\">York<\/a> and 23 other bishops, have said.<\/p>\n<p>The policy was included in the Nationality and Borders Act, which came into law in April despite objections and attempted amendments from bishops and other peers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/lgbtsexuality\">News, 29 April<\/a>). It was explicitly criticised by Archbishop Welby in his Easter sermon (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2022\/22-april\/news\/uk\/rwanda-off-shoring-plan-is-opposite-to-the-nature-of-god-welby-says\">News, 27 April<\/a>), and reportedly by the Prince of Wales last week, who is said to have called it \u201cappalling\u201d in a private conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, campaigners failed to win an injunction against the policy in the High Court, which ruled that it was in the \u201cpublic interest\u201d for the Government to carry it out. An appeal on Monday was rejected for the same reason.
