{"id":116050,"date":"2022-10-19T12:27:38","date_gmt":"2022-10-19T16:27:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=116050"},"modified":"2022-10-19T12:52:13","modified_gmt":"2022-10-19T16:52:13","slug":"1st-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=116050","title":{"rendered":"(1st Things) Jonathon Van Maren&#8211;Canada&#8217;s Killing Regime"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Krista Carr, executive vice president of Inclusion Canada, is one such Canadian. \u201cMost families of children born with disabilities are told from the start that their child will, in one way or another, not have a good quality of life,\u201d she\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/quebec-college-of-physicians-slammed-for-suggesting-maid-for-severely-ill-newborns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<em>National Post<\/em>. \u201cCanada cannot begin killing babies when doctors predict there is no hope for them. Predictions are far too often based on discriminatory assumptions about life with a disability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roy&#8217;s statement is merely the latest episode in a series of euthanasia horror stories from Canada that are shocking even to dulled Western sensibilities. Canada\u2019s Supreme Court overturned criminal prohibitions on assisted suicide in\u00a0<em>Carter v. Canada<\/em>\u00a0in 2015. Shortly afterward, parliament passed Bill C-14 in 2016, which legalized \u201cmedical aid in dying\u201d (or MAiD) for adults with \u201cenduring and intolerable suffering\u201d and a \u201creasonably foreseeable death.\u201d In 2021, Bill C-7 was passed, which legalized MAiD for those struggling with mental illness. Canada has become an international cautionary tale<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Impoverished people are turning to MAiD out of desperation because they cannot access the resources they need or the treatments they require in Canada\u2019s broken healthcare system. The\u00a0<em>Toronto Star<\/em>\u2014the largest and most liberal newspaper in the country\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/local-st-catharines\/life\/2022\/09\/19\/hunger-games-style-social-darwinism-why-disability-advocates-are-worried-about-new-assisted-suicide-laws.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called it<\/a>\u00a0\u201cHunger Games style social Darwinism<strong>.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0The story detailed how one woman is considering assisted suicide because she cannot find an affordable place to live in her city with wheelchair access. Her tale is becoming a common one.<\/p>\n<p>Sixty-three-year-old Alan Philips, who has lived with chronic pain for almost two decades, recently got approved for assisted suicide after trying for eighteen years to get spinal fusion surgery to relieve his agony. He cannot get the surgery and has been prescribed opioids instead. \u201cI cannot get adequate healthcare,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alexschadenberg.blogspot.com\/2022\/09\/ontario-man-approved-for-euthanasia.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2022\/10\/canadas-killing-regime>Read it all<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Canada will soon offer doctor-assisted suicide to patients who suffer from something which (to quote the law) \u201ccannot be relieved under conditions that you consider acceptable.&quot; A nightmarish dispatch from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JVanMaren?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JVanMaren<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qevH7bVE3L\">https:\/\/t.co\/qevH7bVE3L<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Samuel D.
