{"id":11850,"date":"2009-03-22T23:00:25","date_gmt":"2009-03-22T23:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/site\/2017\/2\/1985\/banker_fury_over_tax_witch_hunt\/"},"modified":"2009-03-22T23:00:25","modified_gmt":"2009-03-22T23:00:25","slug":"banker_fury_over_tax_witch_hunt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=11850","title":{"rendered":"Banker fury over tax \u201d\u02dcwitch-hunt\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bankers on Wall Street and in Europe have struck back against moves by US lawmakers to slap punitive taxes on bonuses paid to high earners at bailed-out institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Senior executives on both sides of the Atlantic on Friday warned of an exodus of talent from some of the biggest names in US finance, saying the \u201canti-American\u201d\u009d measures smacked of \u201ca McCarthy witch-hunt\u201d\u009d that would send the country \u201cback to the stone age\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n<p>There were fears that the backlash triggered by AIG\u2019s payment of $165m in bonuses to executives responsible for losses that forced a $170bn taxpayer-funded rescue would have devastating consequences for the largest banks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinance is one of America\u2019s great industries, and they\u2019re destroying it,\u201d\u009d said one banker at a firm that has accepted public money. \u201cThis happened out of haste and anger over AIG, but we\u2019re not like AIG.\u201d\u009d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/cms\/s\/0\/4ff2f77e-1584-11de-b9a9-0000779fd2ac.html?nclick_check=1\">Read it all<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bankers on Wall Street and in Europe have struck back against moves by US lawmakers to slap punitive taxes on bonuses paid to high earners at bailed-out institutions.
