O Lord, thou hast deceived me,
\nand I was deceived;
\nthou art stronger than I,
\nand thou hast prevailed.
\nI have become a laughingstock all the day;
\nevery one mocks me.
\nFor whenever I speak, I cry out,
\nI shout, \u201cViolence and destruction!\u201d
\nFor the word of the Lord has become for me
\na reproach and derision all day long.
\nIf I say, \u201cI will not mention him,
\nor speak any more in his name,\u201d
\nthere is in my heart as it were a burning fire
\nshut up in my bones,
\nand I am weary with holding it in,
\nand I cannot.
\nFor I hear many whispering.
\nTerror is on every side!
\n\u201cDenounce him! Let us denounce him!\u201d
\nsay all my familiar friends,
\nwatching for my fall.
\n\u201cPerhaps he will be deceived,
\nthen we can overcome him,
\nand take our revenge on him.\u201d
\nBut the Lord is with me as a dread warrior;
\ntherefore my persecutors will stumble,
\nthey will not overcome me.
\nThey will be greatly shamed,
\nfor they will not succeed.
