{"id":122,"date":"2007-05-28T23:06:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-28T23:06:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/site\/2017\/2\/1985\/breakthrough_in_breast_cancer_screening\/"},"modified":"2007-05-28T23:06:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-28T23:06:00","slug":"breakthrough_in_breast_cancer_screening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=122","title":{"rendered":"Breakthrough in Breast Cancer Screening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A revolution in cancer screening and treatment within 15 years is heralded today with the announcement of a leap in the ability to identify genes that cause the disease.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are confident that their findings will allow a screening programme, in which the inherited risk of developing cancer can be assessed for every patient, to be in place in an estimated 12-15 years.<\/p>\n<p>Four common genes were identified and a fifth is on the verge of being pinpointed by researchers investigating the causes of breast cancer, almost doubling the number of known rogue genes.<\/p>\n<p>One of the new genes, when found in a mutated form, increases the risk of developing the cancer by up to 60 per cent \u201d\u201d giving a woman a one in six chance of the disease.
