There were\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Rishusharma26\/status\/1678010854976151552?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">terrifying<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GoHimachal_\/status\/1678637369551888384?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">floods<\/a>\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EbrahimNasreen\/status\/1678730144985518080?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">this week<\/a>\u00a0in Himachal Pradesh, in India, where several bridges collapsed and others carrying dozens of cars and trucks seemed about to. Japan\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-gb\/news\/world\/japan-warns-of-heaviest-rain-ever-amid-deadly-floods\/vi-AA1dF2ou?ocid=msedgntp&amp;cvid=b5c73a113d5d47c3b82eacb56ac30856&amp;ei=11&amp;te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">experienced the \u201cheaviest rain ever,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0and in\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/man_1959\/status\/1677763891504246784?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">Spain<\/a>, floodwaters carried cars backward through traffic at rapid speeds, their drivers simply watching powerless from the roof, where they\u2019d taken refuge when the water began filling the cabin. A monthslong heat wave centered on Texas and Mexico and spread outward as far as Miami, which, as of Monday, had reached heat indexes north of 100 degrees\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BMcNoldy\/status\/1678450271666716673?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">for 30 straight days<\/a>. In Death Valley in California, this week temperatures may reach or surpass the global record of 130 degrees Fahrenheit, set just in 2021. In El Paso, there hasn\u2019t been a day that didn\u2019t hit 100\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2023\/07\/08\/el-paso-poised-to-break-triple-digit-record\/?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">for weeks<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<table width=\"100%\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"left\">Off the coast of Florida, the water was\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BMcNoldy\/status\/1678541200482074626?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">nearly as warm as a hot tub<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 95 degrees according to one buoy, 97 degrees according to another. According to a coral bleaching\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/coralreefwatch.noaa.gov\/satellite\/bleachingoutlook_cfs\/outlook_cfs.php?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">forecast<\/a>\u00a0published by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there is\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ProfTerryHughes\/status\/1678491036514131968?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">likely to be bleaching across the entire Caribbean this summer<\/a>. It\u2019s not clear\u00a0<a class=\"css-5nb5nb\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WeatherProf\/status\/1678732250169462784?te=1&amp;nl=david-wallace-wells&amp;emc=edit_dww_20230712\">how much will survive<\/a>.
