But when a team of artificial intelligence researchers at\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/01\/technology\/nvidia-chipmaker.html\">the computer chip company Nvidia<\/a>\u00a0got their hands on the chatbot\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/14\/technology\/openai-gpt4-chatgpt.html\">underlying technology<\/a>, they realized it could do a lot more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Within weeks, they taught it to play Minecraft, one of the world\u2019s most popular video games. Inside Minecraft\u2019s digital universe, it learned to swim, gather plants, hunt pigs, mine gold and build houses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt can go into the Minecraft world and explore by itself and collect materials by itself and get better and better at all kinds of skills,\u201d said a Nvidia senior research scientist, Linxi Fan, who is known as Jim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/voyager.minedojo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The project<\/a>\u00a0was an early sign that the world\u2019s leading artificial intelligence researchers are transforming chatbots into a new kind of autonomous system called an A.I. agent. These agents can do more than chat.
