The Government\u2019s new definition of extremism is likely to \u201cvilify the wrong people\u201d by threatening freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have warned.<\/p>\n
In a joint statement published on Tuesday afternoon, Archbishops Welby and Cottrell said that the plan also \u201crisks disproportionately targeting Muslim communities, who are already experiencing rising levels of hate and abuse\u201d.<\/p>\n
Their statement pre-empts an announcement, expected on Thursday, in which the Communities Secretary, Michael Gove, plans to broaden the official definition of extremism to include individuals and groups who \u201cundermine the UK\u2019s system of liberal democracy\u201d \u2014 and ban them from public life.<\/p>\n
