Kali Gaddie was a college senior when the pandemic abruptly upended her life plans\u2014and made her part of a big and deeply unhappy political force that figures to play a huge role in the 2024 election season.<\/p>\n
Her graduation was postponed, she was let go from her college job and her summer internship got canceled. She spent the final months of school taking online classes from her parents\u2019 house. \u201cYou would think that there\u2019s a plan B or a safety net,\u201d she said. \u201cBut there\u2019s actually not.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today, Gaddie, 25, works as an office manager in Atlanta earning less than $35,000 a year. In her spare time, she uploads videos to TikTok, where she\u2019s amassed thousands of followers. Now, that\u2019s at risk of being taken away too. All of this has left her dejected and increasingly skeptical of politicians.<\/p>\n
Young adults in Generation Z\u2014those born in 1997 or after\u2014have emerged from the pandemic feeling more disillusioned than any living generation before them, according to long-running surveys and interviews with dozens of young people around the country. They worry they\u2019ll never make enough money to attain the security previous generations have achieved, citing their delayed launch into adulthood, an impenetrable housing market and loads of student debt. <\/p>\n
