He was 98.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moltmann is widely regarded as one of the most important theologians since World War II. According to theologian Miroslav Volf, his work was \u201cexistential and academic, pastoral and political, innovative and traditional, readable and demanding, contextual and universal,\u201d as he showed how the central themes of Christian faith spoke to the \u201cfundamental human experiences\u201d of suffering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Council of Churches&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oikoumene.org\/news\/jurgen-moltmann-theologian-of-hope-dies-at-98\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;that Moltmann is \u201cthe most widely read Christian theologian\u201d of the last 80 years. Religion scholar Martin Marty&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/3x5aK9T\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;his writings \u201cinspire an uncertain Church\u201d and \u201cfree people from the dead hands of dead pasts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moltmann was not an evangelical, but many evangelicals engaged deeply with his work.
