The Archbishop of York is under pressure to step down over his handling of child abuse cases in the Church of England<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Most Rev Stephen Cottrell<\/a> faced calls to resign on Sunday from a survivor who said he is perpetuating a Church \u201ccover-up\u201d and a former abuse inquiry leader whose work was prematurely disbanded by the Archbishops\u2019 Council last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rev Matthew Ineson, 56, a retired vicar who was abused at 16 by a Bradford priest, said the Archbishop of York failed to hold clergy accountable for mishandling his case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said: \u201cUntil there is a complete clean sweep at the top, nothing is going to change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The demands follow the resignation of the\u00a0Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby<\/a>, last week, who was forced to quit over his\u00a0failure to act on concerns<\/a>\u00a0over child abuse committed by evangelical Christian\u00a0John Smyth<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
