More Church of England leaders were aware of the John Smyth scandal and should follow the Archbishop of Canterbury\u2019s decision to resign, according to the head of the official inquiry into child abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Alexis Jay said that abuse continued in the church and the cover-up of Smyth\u2019s decades of wrongdoing could not be \u201cdown to one person\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Most Rev Justin Welby, 68, will\u00a0stand down<\/a>\u00a0in January and pass his duties to the Archbishop of York, the Most Rev Stephen Cottrell, who will act in a \u201ccaretaker\u201d role.<\/p>\n\n\n\nRead it all<\/a> (subscription).
