{"id":135198,"date":"2025-02-25T17:30:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-25T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=135198"},"modified":"2025-02-25T19:41:26","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T00:41:26","slug":"church-times-safeguarding-team-seeks-to-bring-cdm-clergy-discipline-measure-cases-against-ten-clerics-named-by-makin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=135198","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) Safeguarding team seeks to bring CDM [Clergy Discipline Measure] cases against ten clerics named by Makin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ten members of the clergy, including two bishops, could be subject to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/clergy-discipline-measure-cdm\">disciplinary proceedings<\/a>\u00a0in connection with the abuse perpetrated by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/john-smyth\">John Smyth<\/a>, if the President of the Tribunals permits the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/safeguarding\">National Safeguarding Team<\/a>\u00a0(NST) to bring complaints under the Clergy Discipline Measure (CDM) out of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They include a former&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/bishop-of-durham\">Bishop of Durham<\/a>, the Rt Revd Paul Butler, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/lord-carey\">Lord Carey<\/a>, a former Archbishop of Canterbury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement, made by the NST on Tuesday, concludes a four-stage process considering the actions of clergy named in the Makin review of Smyth\u2019s abuse (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2024\/6-december\/news\/uk\/national-safeguarding-team-sets-out-next-steps-after-makin-review\">News, 5 December 2024<\/a>). The review culminated in recommendations by a panel; and these were reviewed by an independent barrister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Church House statement said that the panel had \u201cconsidered the safeguarding policies and guidance which were in force at the relevant time, the facts of the particular case, the relevant legal considerations and whether there is sufficient evidence to justify proceedings\u201d.
