{"id":139720,"date":"2025-09-12T18:11:46","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T22:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=139720"},"modified":"2025-09-12T18:14:58","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T22:14:58","slug":"church-times-lords-spiritual-gather-behind-opposition-to-assisted-dying-bill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=139720","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) Lords Spiritual gather behind opposition to assisted-dying Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Bishops decried the proposed legalisation of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/assisted-dying\">assisted dying<\/a>&nbsp;on Friday, as the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill came to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/house-of-lords\">House of Lords<\/a>&nbsp;for the first of two days of debate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf passed, this Bill will signal that we are a society that believes that some lives are not worth living,\u201d the Bishop of London, the Rt Revd Sarah Mullally, said. It would become, she said, the \u201cstate-endorsed position\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bishop Mullally, a former Chief Nursing Officer, questioned whether Parliament had properly listened to the advice of medical experts, including professional bodies which have expressed concerns about the legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bill also failed in its \u201ccentral claim\u201d to give people choice about the manner of their death, she said. \u201cA meaningful choice would see the measures in this Bill set alongside easily available, fully-funded, palliative and social-care services.
