{"id":14,"date":"2007-05-22T20:38:00","date_gmt":"2007-05-22T20:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/site\/2017\/2\/1985\/kendall_harmon_exercising_authority\/"},"modified":"2007-05-22T20:38:00","modified_gmt":"2007-05-22T20:38:00","slug":"kendall_harmon_exercising_authority","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=14","title":{"rendered":"Kendall Harmon: Exercising Authority"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a long time a number of posters on House of Bishops\/deputies listserv and prominent TEC leaders have gone on and on about the Anglican Communion&#8217;s Instruments of Unity having no real authority.<\/p>\n<p>What is interesting to me about Archbishop Williams statement is that he acknowledges the authority he has to invite, or not to invite, indeed possibly even to withdraw a given invitation, to the Lambeth Conference.  He then chooses (in a rare instance in Anglican history) to exercise that authority in a few &#8220;cases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This goes all the way back to <i><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anglicancommunioninstitute.org\/articles\/summtomend.htm\" title=\"Mend the Net\">Mend the Net<\/a><\/b><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>So let&#8217;s end the fiction that the instruments do not really exist, or that they don&#8217;t matter, or don&#8217;t have any real authority.<\/p>\n<p>They do have authority. And we do seek to be an Anglican Communion.
