{"id":140883,"date":"2025-10-29T08:57:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T12:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=140883"},"modified":"2025-10-29T18:14:52","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T22:14:52","slug":"wsj-tens-of-thousands-of-white-collar-jobs-are-disappearing-as-ai-starts-to-bite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=140883","title":{"rendered":"(WSJ) Tens of Thousands of White-Collar Jobs Are Disappearing as AI Starts to Bite"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The nation\u2019s largest employers have a new message for office workers: help not wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/AMZN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amazon.com<\/a>&nbsp;said this week that it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/amazon-to-layoff-tens-of-thousands-of-corporate-workers-056ebc4d?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">would cut 14,000 corporate jobs<\/a>, with plans to eliminate as much as 10% of its white-collar workforce eventually.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/UPS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Parcel Service<\/a>&nbsp;said Tuesday that it had reduced its management workforce by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/logistics\/united-parcel-service-ups-q3-earnings-report-2025-stock-jobs-layoffs-1d954f75?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 14,000 positions<\/a>&nbsp;over the past 22 months, days after the retailer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/TGT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Target<\/a>&nbsp;said it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/retail\/target-to-cut-around-1-000-jobs-910556f2?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">would cut 1,800 corporate roles<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in October, white-collar workers from companies including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/RIVN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rivian Automotive<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/TAP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Molson Coors<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/BAH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Booz Allen Hamilton<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/GM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">General Motors<\/a>&nbsp;received pink slips\u2014or learned that they would come soon. Added up, tens of thousands of newly laid off&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/retail\/molson-coors-to-cut-9-of-americas-workforce-in-restructuring-3b0b0304?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">white-collar workers<\/a>&nbsp;in America are entering a stagnant job market with seemingly no place for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday,&nbsp;Kelly Williamson&nbsp;woke up to an alarming text from her employer, Amazon\u2019s Whole Foods Market, urging her to check her email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReview asap and stay home from work today,\u201d the message said. Williamson\u2019s role on the asset-protection team was being eliminated. The badge and laptop for the 55-year-old from Austin, Texas, were deactivated. She was given 90 days to look for another job at the company.
