Bishops and\u00a0charities<\/a>, praising the removal of the two-child\u00a0benefit<\/a>\u00a0cap, say that it will lift hundreds of thousands of children out of poverty. The change was announced in the Autumn\u00a0Budget<\/a>\u00a0by the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, on Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Prime Minister Gordon Brown<\/a> congratulated faith leaders who had long called for the policy, which had been introduced by the Conservative Chancellor George Osborne shortly after the 2015 General Election, to be scrapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom April, nearly half a million children will be lifted out of poverty, thanks to their campaign, for which I thank all religious leaders,\u201d he told the Church Times.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Church of England\u2019s lead bishop for child-poverty<\/a> issues, the Bishop of Leicester<\/a>, the Rt Revd Martyn Snow, said that the decision would \u201cmake a profoundly positive difference to hundreds of thousands of children and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
