This is Al Hol detention camp, where most detainees are family members \u2014 wives, sisters, children \u2014 of fighters for the terrorist group Islamic State, or ISIS.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/The-al-Hol-Displacement-Camp-in-Syria-and-Associated-ISIS-Detention-Sites-Accessible-9.24.2025.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">More than 8,000 fighters<\/a>&nbsp;themselves are in prisons nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, ISIS ruled large parts of Syria and neighboring Iraq, brutally enforcing its strict interpretation of Islamic law. As Kurdish-led Syrian forces backed by the United States battled to reclaim that land, they detained thousands of ISIS fighters and tens of thousands of their relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. forces entrusted their Syrian Kurdish allies with guarding the ISIS detainees and families.
