{"id":143175,"date":"2026-02-10T18:35:07","date_gmt":"2026-02-10T23:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=143175"},"modified":"2026-02-10T18:40:49","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T23:40:49","slug":"telegraph-a-third-of-c-of-e-clergy-could-be-suffering-depression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=143175","title":{"rendered":"(Telegraph) A Third of C of E clergy could be suffering depression"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A third of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/church-of-england\/\">Church of England<\/a>&nbsp;clergy could be suffering from depression, according to a Church report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some 16 per cent of 500 clergy polled \u201cshow indications of probable clinical depression\u201d, with a further 13 per cent showing \u201cindications of possible or mild depression\u201d, the Living Ministry report on clergy well-being from 2017 to last year found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This could mean that around 6,000 out of the 20,000 total clergy within the Church are suffering depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Covid pandemic, the cost of living crisis, wars, climate change and \u201csocial movements calling for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2026\/02\/08\/church-losing-its-most-dedicated-followers\/\">gender and racial justice<\/a>\u201d are among the factors affecting clergy, according to the internal report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Problems within the Church, such as dwindling congregations, safeguarding failures and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2024\/11\/12\/archbishop-canterbury-justin-welby-resigns\/\">resignation of Justin Welby<\/a>&nbsp;as Archbishop of Canterbury in 2024, also added to their stress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2026\/02\/09\/thousands-of-clergy-suffering-depression\/\">Read it all<\/a>.<\/p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We reported on these findings in 2024.
