{"id":144312,"date":"2026-04-01T17:30:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T21:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=144312"},"modified":"2026-04-01T18:40:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T22:40:32","slug":"church-times-50","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=144312","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) Bishop of Southwark expresses doubts over [so-called] assisted-dying Bill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/bishop-of-southwark\">Bishop of Southwark<\/a>, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, was among the speakers who last week expressed further doubts over the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill when it was debated in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/house-of-lords\">House of Lords<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bishop Chessun raised the prospect of \u201cpressure on all sorts of ancillary staff\u201d who could be \u201cco-opted, either directly or indirectly, into what becomes the final procedure, when the conscience of such an ancillary participant tells them that they should have nothing to do with such a procedure\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bishop pointed out that, when it comes to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/assisted-dying\">assisted dying<\/a>, \u201cmatters of acute conscience are not restricted to the immediate preparation of a lethal dosage or the medical oversight of the procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He went on to ask: \u201cIs it right that they should face sanction or inhibition of their careers, or even dismissal?
