Chiu described himself as a \u201cformer homophobe\u201d\u009d who, encouraged by his pastor to look at the ELCA documents, changed his mind about the issue. \u201cChange is good; being a rebel is not bad,\u201d\u009d said Chiu, Northeastern Ohio Synod.<\/p>\n<p>The Rev. Craig Werting of the South Dakota Synod urged voting members of the assembly not to be swayed by the \u201cmany stories on both side of this issue that present emotional appeals.\u201d\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who listens cannot help but be moved,\u201d\u009d he said, \u201cbut emotions themselves do not make an argument.
