{"id":145788,"date":"2026-06-10T08:57:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T12:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=145788"},"modified":"2026-06-11T07:23:53","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T11:23:53","slug":"church-times-no-public-appetite-for-forcing-through-controversial-so-called-assisted-dying-legislation-poll-suggests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=145788","title":{"rendered":"(Church Times) No public appetite for forcing through controversial [so-called] assisted-dying legislation, poll suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/bishop-of-newcastle\">Bishop of Newcastle<\/a>, Dr Helen-Ann Hartley, has welcomed a poll of more than 10,000 people which suggests that a majority in all 632 parliamentary constituencies oppose the proposed law on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/assisted-dying\">assisted dying<\/a>\u00a0being revisited without full scrutiny and approval by both chambers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Hartley was on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/topics\/house-of-lords\">House of Lords<\/a>&nbsp;select committee that examined the Private Member\u2019s Bill brought by the Labour MP Kim Leadbeater in October 2024 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2024\/18-october\/news\/uk\/bishops-warn-of-duty-to-die-if-leadbeater-bill-is-carried\">News, 18 October 2024<\/a>), and spoke against it before it was defeated earlier this year in the Upper House (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2026\/1-may\/news\/uk\/assisted-dying-bill-falls-in-house-of-lords\">News, 1 May<\/a>).
