An investigation into why the public have lost confidence in the Church of England is required, the\u00a0General Synod<\/a>\u00a0heard on Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rector of St Bartholomew\u2019s, Smithfield, Fr Marcus Walker (London), speaking during a debate on the report Trust and Trustworthiness in the Church of England<\/em>, observed that all 16 members of the laity<\/a> interviewed for the report were involved in the Church\u2019s structures (News, 3 July<\/a>). They comprised six diocesan secretaries, and ten lay chairs or members of General Synod.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe elephant in the room \u2014 the elephant herd harrumphing around the report \u2014 is all of those who are outside, alongside, walking with the household of faith,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe people who have not lost faith from within the institution of the Church, but who have lost trust in the institution of the Church. Who have lost trust in the Church and its mission. . .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
