For 275 years, St. Michael\u2019s Church has towered above Charleston as the city grew and transformed around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Its 186-foot steeple has long served as a navigational landmark, lookout and witness to some of the defining moments of the city and nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The narrow wooden steps \u2014 each worn in the center by centuries of foot traffic \u2014 wind up the brick-lined steeple, above the church\u2019s eight bells, to the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s not just the ascent that takes one\u2019s breath away, it\u2019s the reward of a 360-degree view of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI often come up here to write my sermons,\u201d said the Rev. Al Zadig Jr., rector of St. Michael’s since 2007.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
