Since a deadlocked jury <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/us-news\/lindsay-clancy-murder-trial-ends-in-mistrial-9363aa79?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forced a mistrial<\/a> in early September, more than $500,000 in additional bets have been placed on whether the Massachusetts woman accused of killing her children will eventually be convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Utah, a trial date hasn\u2019t been set yet for Tyler Robinson, who stands accused of killing conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at a university event last year. But even before Robinson formally entered a not guilty plea last month, more than $300,000 had been wagered on the outcome.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both cases, the bets were available on an offshore platform run by Polymarket. The site also has hosted bets on the federal prosecution of Sean \u201cDiddy\u201d Combs and the government\u2019s current case against ousted Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prediction markets are raising novel ethical concerns and insider-trading risks on everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/c-suite\/cluster-of-polymarket-accounts-won-big-on-companies-audited-by-kpmg-b4d322f7?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corporate auditing<\/a> to U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/us-news\/law\/u-s-soldier-in-maduro-raid-is-charged-with-making-bets-on-leaders-ouster-535caf49?mod=article_inline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">military operations<\/a>. Those headaches are now at the courthouse door, presenting particularly unusual challenges for the justice system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen the public treats a courtroom like a casino, due process is susceptible to corruption,\u201d said C.
