{"id":15244,"date":"2009-09-29T16:23:03","date_gmt":"2009-09-29T16:23:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/site\/2017\/2\/1985\/hindu_converts_to_christianity_to_keep_caste_status\/"},"modified":"2009-09-29T16:23:03","modified_gmt":"2009-09-29T16:23:03","slug":"hindu_converts_to_christianity_to_keep_caste_status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=15244","title":{"rendered":"Hindu converts to Christianity to keep Caste status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Church leaders in India have welcomed the call by the Andhra Pradesh State Assembly for India\u2019s federal government to allow Hindu Dalits who convert to Christianity to keep their protected status as members of a Scheduled Caste (SC).<\/p>\n<p>On Aug 25 the legislature of the southeastern Indian state passed a resolution presented by the state\u2019s chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy that petitions the national government to amend the Constitution to confer SC status on Dalit Christians.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian Constitution allows quotas in educational institutions and government jobs for members of castes once considered \u201cuntouchable,\u201d\u009d to support their social and economic advancement.
