The governing body of one of our state university systems is considering a plan to arm professors. In response to the Virginia Tech shootings on 16 April this year, the Nevada Board of Regents has proposed sending professors on a training course, and deputising them so that they can carry firearms on campus legally. \u201cGod, guns, and guts make America great\u201d\u009d, as the old bumper sticker had it.<\/p>\n
Why do we Americans like guns so much? Because we think we live in Mogadishu. Somalis won\u2019t lay down their weapons because they know that if they give up their firearms, but others don\u2019t, they\u2019ll be shot by members of rival clans. If you live in a failed state you can\u2019t count on the government to protect you; so you rely on God, guns, and guts.<\/p>\n
