This may be the source of Justice [Samuel] Alito\u2019s frustration. Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Lutheran, and Jewish justices sat with him on the bench. Their governing religious bodies have been active on a variety of legal issues \u201d\u201c and yet their affiliation with these \u201cmainstream\u201d\u009d denominations is normalized.<\/p>\n
There is a perception that somehow, one\u2019s religious belief \u201d\u201c whatever it is \u201d\u201c can be tucked away so that it has no influence on one\u2019s thinking. Yet the foundational values from which one operates \u201d\u201c be they secular humanist or religious \u201d\u201c will inevitably have an effect on one\u2019s thinking. It\u2019s surprising that the press has only thought about this with regard to the Catholic justices.<\/p>\n
