{"id":15964,"date":"2009-11-07T04:39:58","date_gmt":"2009-11-07T04:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/127.0.0.1\/site\/2017\/2\/1985\/the_employment_picture_and_the_current_administrations_stimulus_package_def\/"},"modified":"2009-11-07T04:39:58","modified_gmt":"2009-11-07T04:39:58","slug":"the_employment_picture_and_the_current_administrations_stimulus_package_def","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kendallharmon.net\/?p=15964","title":{"rendered":"Innocent Bystanders: The Employment Picture and the Current Administration&#39;s Stimulus Defense"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The President and his economic team have claimed that the plan is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&#038;sid=a0StZd9y2rCY\">working<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/beltwayblips.dailyradar.com\/story\/biden-on-stimulus-never-thought-it-would-work-this\">as<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/white-house-aide-claims-stimulus-working-2009-08-06\">intended<\/a>, that they\u2019re <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap\/20091030\/ap_on_bi_ge\/us_stimulus_jobs\">on track<\/a> to save the original goal of 3.6 million jobs, but somehow, despite practically drowning in success, we\u2019re going to have to live with high unemployment for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2009\/09\/11\/summers-unemployment-will_n_284293.html\">years to come<\/a>. Oh, and that everything is still <a href=\"http:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/worldNews\/idINIndia-43692420091104?sp=true\">Bush\u2019s fault<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>These claims have been debunked by a variety of sources, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/nation\/washington\/articles\/2009\/11\/05\/pay_raises_used_to_tally_number_of_jobs_saved_by_stimulus\">AP<\/a> (and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5jMNoef6xDenBbHWO0Im6rIjDmAgAD9BKKBIG0\">here<\/a>), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/education\/chi-education-stimulus-04-nov04,0,4659134.story\">Chicago Tribune<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/ci_13681569\">Denver Post<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/news\/washington\/2009-11-02-stimjobs_N.htm\">USA Today<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/washwire\/2009\/11\/02\/in-the-battle-for-stimulus-jobs-shoe-store-owner-offers-war-story\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>, and blogs such as <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalmath.wordpress.com\/2009\/11\/05\/dirty-stimulus-jobs-data-exaggerates-stimulus-impact\">Political Math<\/a> (H\/T d3ft punk).<\/p>\n<p>But forget the quantitative treatment for a moment and consider what the Obama team\u2019s graph said on a qualitative level. The graph says that within a couple of quarters, the stimulus package will stop the increase in unemployment and reverse the employment trend. That was the real mission of the stimulus. Stop job loss. Get the private sector hiring again.<\/p>\n<p>So no matter how convoluted and fanciful the \u201cjobs created or saved\u201d\u009d numbers get, we just have to remember what the point used to be, and realize how far short we\u2019ve fallen.
