A decision by the Anglican mission society the USPG to end its funding to Latin America and the Caribbean has been criticised by bishops in the region….<\/p>\n
When the changes were first mooted in March, the Primate of Brazil, the Most Revd Mauricio Andrade, and ten other Brazilian bishops wrote to the society\u2019s trustees to express \u201csurprise and disappointment\u201d\u009d.<\/p>\n
They had not been consulted, they said, and it was \u201cunjustifiable\u201d\u009d to \u201ccompletely eliminate an entire con\u00c2\u00adtinent from your sphere of mission\u201d\u009d. This demonstrated a \u201clack of con\u00c2\u00adcern for Latin America and the Carib\u00c2\u00ad\u00c2\u00adbean within the Anglican Com\u00c2\u00admunion\u201d\u009d, and smacked of \u201ccolonial favouritism\u201d\u009d. The cuts would force them to \u201cabandon\u201d\u009d projects. They called for period of transition.<\/p>\n
The Bishop of Peru, the Rt Revd Bill Godfrey, described the decision to \u201ccut off this whole part of the world as extraordinary and regret\u00c2\u00adtable\u201d\u009d. He said that he had \u201cbeen on USPG\u2019s books for 25 years\u201d\u009d. While he acknowledged that the USPG had to balance its books, he said: \u201cI find it hard to believe the only answer is to withdraw funding. There have always been good times and more difficult times financially, but we pass through them.\u201d\u009d<\/p>\n
He, too, spoke of a lack of con\u00c2\u00adsultation….<\/p>\n
